Abstract

This chapter provides detailed discussion of postmortem changes, including the classic signs of death, livor mortis and rigor mortis, as well as other early postmortem changes. The chapter also discusses issues related to estimating the time of death (postmortem interval), changes encountered in the decomposition process, and postmortem injuries.

Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. ‘Take away the stone,’ he said. ‘But Lord,’ said Martha, ‘by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.’John 11:38–39
