Abstract
As a physician-scientist, you should have a clear understanding of the difference between a university and a hospital appointment, what tenure means, and how the promotion system works. If you are fortunate enough to work at a university that awards tenure, you should understand what a sabbatical implies. Universities vary regarding their tenure and promotions policies (Table 5.1). As a result, my discussion on these issues will be general. I encourage you to examine the specific policies at your institution.
