Abstract

Much information is available on the pathophysiology of anal and anorectal structures, but much less is known regarding the motility pattern and physiology of the colon, and even less of colonic motility in the pediatric patient. In this chapter we discuss the normal physiology of the colon, the process of defecation, colonic manometry in children, including normal and abnormal motility patterns. We discuss the motility abnormalities present in patients afflicted by defecatory disorders as well as effect of medication on motility patterns.
