Abstract

In this chapter we consider parametric control. This is a novel approach that is particularly useful in the control of thermal processes. The regulation of the hot/cold fluid flow in a batch reactor would represent a typical application domain for this technique. Parametric control is unusual in that it acts on a structural parameter, as opposed to classical control that acts on a state input. The technique uses a realigned model approach. Thus, to remove any possible bias, the parametric controller is cascaded with a classical PFC controller, that uses an independent internal model implementation. Since passive thermal exchange processes can be represented by linear systems with real poles, the stability of the controller is ensured.
