Abstract
This chapter is a brief account of the history of the ideas that provided the conceptual basis for metamorphic petrology, with a list of outstanding researchers who made the greatest contributions to the study of metamorphism mostly until the end of the last century. The main emphasis is on the evolution of views on mineral transformations in rocks, including the kinetics of metamorphism and metamorphic facies concepts in terms of the diversity of mineral assemblages. Such a retrospect takes the reader into a set of problems of metamorphic petrology and introduces the terms and concepts.
