Abstract

The purpose of this edited collection is to provide a platform to discuss how the concepts of multiculturalism, diversity, and inclusion are understood and the impact of these understandings in creation of policies and practices in integration of newcomers in North America. There are multitheoretical frameworks in the chapters, which include sociology, philosophy, political science, critical and postcolonial theory. Diversity in reference to inclusion of women, sexual minorities, and minority newcomers have become topical issues. However, there are other minorities, including Aboriginals, who need social justice under the umbrella of inclusion and diversity. The book attempts to address all these complex issues. The book challenges the stereotypical definitions of multiculturalism, diversity, and inclusion. Authors pose the question whether diversity and inclusion are compatible or competing paradigms. Perspectives differ depending on whether the emphasis should be philosophy, ethics, history, or politics in the development of states and acquisition of citizenship.
