Abstract

This chapter review the role that water plays in energy production. It is necessary for conventional and nonconventional oil and gas production, for steam-driven turbines that produce electricity, and for cooling in thermal and nuclear power generation plants. In all these applications, the processes often severely pollute the water, which then may be discharged untreated into surface water and groundwater supplies.
