Abstract

An analysis of the structure of the Joseph sura and the interpretation that follows from it shows an orientation of this text different from that of the story in Genesis. While the latter is more developed and centered on “the invention of fraternity” through the interplay of human relations, of which God is nearly absent, the text of the Qur’an is more schematic, built in a large mirror-like construction, centered on the conduct of God on all the events to lead Joseph from decay to the triumph of success. Joseph appears clearly as a figure of Muhammad who, after the contradictions encountered in the beginning of his prophetic preaching, is led by God to success.
