Abstract

It is suggested that if the work of the IMF is judged by the declared objectives of eradicating poverty, boosting growth, enhancing social expenditure and raising the standard of living, then it has been a dismal failure. However, if it is judged by the undeclared objectives of looting domestic assets, impoverishing developing countries, imposing neoliberal ideas on developing countries and having free access for the corporate “west” to sources of raw materials and markets, then it has been a spectacular success. It seems that IMF operations have set the standard for how to do things effectively, efficiently and successfully.
