Abstract

This chapter invites a consideration of some of the points of contact and reciprocity between multilingual writing of the late and early twentieth century, and of Europe, the Caribbean and the United States. Williams asserts that by reading the twentieth-century novel through recourse to the multilingual, we can productively undermine some of the arbitrary distinctions between extant periodical divisions, and that in the multilingual we can identify one means of unifying close literary analysis with more distant world-literary approaches.
