The Falklands Dispute and the Argentine–British War

Abstract

The main theme of the chapter is the Argentine–British dispute over the Falklands archipelago, called Malvinas in the Spanish-speaking world. The process that led to the decision to take the archipelago over from the British is presented. The chapter briefly discusses the genesis of the dispute and indicates the circumstances leading to Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands. It also addresses the effects of offensive actions undertaken by Argentina, mainly the war with Great Britain, which was its direct result.

    The vote on the resolution ended in 94 votes in favor (including the Argentine one), 0 votes against, and 14 abstention votes. The abstention countries were (in alphabetical order): Australia, Denmark, Finland, France , Iceland, Canada , The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal , Republic of South Africa , Sweden, United States , and Great Britain (UN General Assembly 1965).

    At signing of the agreement the Falklanders living on the islands would keep their British citizenship. Their children would have dual citizenship, and grandchildren only Argentine citizenship. The changes in the matter of citizenship would also be accompanied by successive reforms in terms of legislation and administration (CAERCAS 1983).

    Events which were used as examples of analogous activity on the part of the United States from the past were: the Suez Crisis in 1956 when the US was the main power opposing the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, forcing the British to cease fire and withdraw their forces from Egypt ; the Yom Kippur War, during which the US pressed Israel to withhold its offensive on the Egyptian Third Army, offering Egypt ceasefire (Burns 2002).

    The document from the junta meeting from 5th January 1982 was not available at the evaluation of the Falklands conflict at the turn of 1982 and 1983. It is unclear whether it had been prepared altogether or destroyed later on. The content of the meeting was recaptured based on the participants’ testimonies before the Commission for the analysis and evaluation of political and military strategic responsibilities in the South Atlantic conflict (Comisión de análisis y evaluación de las responsabilidades políticas y estratégico militares en el conflicto del Atlántico Sur).

    This information was passed on to the minister by General Galtieri between 15 and 28 February 1982. Regardless, however, Costa Méndez had been aware of Galtieri ’s intention since the beginning of his term in office (Declaración testimonial del Doctor Nicanor Costa Mendez 1983).

    As opposed to 1978, in 1982 the Military Committee and the junta were composed of the same members as a result of General Galtieri combining the function of President with that of a junta member. The military officers decided, however, to hold sessions in this composition due to the traditional function of the Military Committee —a body responsible for all matters related to national security.
