Abstract

Orthodontic treatment for any child is by and large elective. Even in the case of outlier orthodontic conditions, the best treatment may not involve tooth movement. The clinician’s mindset is the greatest indicator of treatment success for the patient with an intellectual disability (ID). In essence, orthodontic treatment of the child with an ID is the art of the achievable and not the science of the improbable. The tenets of evidence-based dental practice are very difficult to apply when your sample population is so unique that n always equals 1. This chapter will discuss a pragmatic approach to orthodontic treatment for children with intellectual disabilities.
