Abstract
Although histopathological examination is the gold standard for the diagnosis of tumoral diseases, cytology is particularly important for the diagnosis of tumors located in areas that are difficult to biopsy, to determine the type of surgical treatment to, and for detecting relapse in follow-up. Cytological examination can be used not only in benign tumors but also in the diagnosis of malignant tumors. Atypia criteria including poikilocytosis, poikilocytosis, mitosis, nuclear contour irregularity, and nuclear moldings should be checked for differentiation of benign and malignant tumors. If cellular atypia is detected by cytological examination, type of malignant tumor is determined according to the characteristics of the cell.
