Abstract

Generation of recalcitrant pollutants and their unwarranted release both at industrial and domestic levels along with stricter environmental regulations are the main driving factors for developing bioremediation techniques against wastewater effluents. Microalgae assimilate biomass while efficiently mitigating different types of wastewater, which can be utilized for production of biofuels particularly biodiesel. Integrating remediation with biodiesel production using microalgae provides an economically viable and sustainable approach. Among the microalgal strains for wastewater remediation, Scenedesmus sp. is capable of growing and mitigating all the type of wastewaters (industrial, domestic, agricultural, etc.) via accumulating neutral lipids. In the present chapter, the applicability of Scenedesmus sp. for different wastewater mitigation convoyed with biodiesel production has been catalogued. The chapter also discusses biochemical compositional analysis and FAME profiling of different Scenedesmus sp. that are cultivated in an array of wastewater effluents.
