Abstract

Judith Hart was elected MP for Lanark in 1959 and held the seat all her parliamentary life. This chapter looks at her early life and discusses her journey from university undergraduate through to her parliamentary career. In 1964, Hart was promoted first to Under-Secretary of State for Scotland, then to Minister of State at the Commonwealth and lastly to Minister of Social Security. This chapter discusses the challenges she faced in all these posts both as a woman politician and the first Minister to have children.
