Abstract

Medical imaging is critical to the diagnosis and management of malignant pleural mesothelioma, being linked to diagnosis, staging, clinical management, surgical planning, and surveillance. Chest radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) all play distinct roles in the assessment of this specific patient population; invariably, the discovery and initial diagnosis of this disease centers on imaging. Optimizing imaging protocols and the ordering of imaging examinations is important to increase sensitivity and early detection. Starting with plain radiographs, this chapter will trace the strengths and weaknesses of each imaging modality as they pertain to pleural mesothelioma and will lead the reader to make improved choices concerning patient care. Having a thorough appreciation of the role of imaging in this specific population is especially important to optimize patient outcomes.
