The World of Materials

Abstract

When investigating materials, the understanding of basic atomic structure is imperative. Beginning with elementary knowledge of protons, neutrons and electrons, their relative location, shell structure, and atomic mass, enables the scientist in their understanding of the composition of the material, its bonding structure, how can the material possibly be strengthen, as well as how the material can be altered to improve the original material against corrosion, stress and/or strain.

In the course of 150 years, the periodic table has evolved into the table of chemical elements we have today. This organization of elements, originating in 1800s, has given the scientific community a better understanding of the composition of elements. Electrons, protons, and the nucleus are terms taken for granted today because of the work done with the periodic table while in high school.
