Abstract
What’s so different about older people that they warrant having their own medical specialty? Some healthcare providers argue that older people suffer the same diseases as middle-aged people; they simply have more of them. This approach can lead to over- and underdiagnosis and over- and undertreatment for older adults, since the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases may be different, causing excess burden, morbidity, and mortality.
