Abstract

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder and is characterized by resting tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity, and postural and gait instability. Pathology related to the disease itself, as well as the medications used to treat it, presents unique problems, which make inpatient and perioperative care of PD patients challenging. Suboptimal management can lead to perioperative complications, prolonged hospitalization, and delayed recovery from surgery. Anticipating potential complications and taking steps to prevent these can improve safety and quality of care for PD patients.
