Abstract

The purpose of the article is to identify a key analysis able to combine smart governance with urban and place-based dynamics in island contexts. To this end, authors schematize types, classifications, levels of smart performance and also the most common issues and resolutions in island contexts, starting from a systematic review of the terminology studied in the last 11 years. This literature review proposes a systematic approach by analyzing the most well-known databases in scientific research (Google Scholar, Scopus and Science Direct) in order to catalog and systematize the most optimal methodologies and approaches in the study of island contexts. This article shows a first phase of a broader research, and it provides a bibliographic basis to understand how the Smart paradigm can change the normal management perspective of the island territory.

This paper is the result of the joint work of the authors. In particular, Sects. 2, 3, and 4 have been jointly written by Giulia Desogus and Chiara Garau. Giulia Desogus has written Sect. 1. Chiara Garau has written Sect. 5 and revised the whole paper and checked for its comprehensive consistency. Pasquale Mistretta supervised the article.
