Abstract

Through three site studies, this chapter breaks down different types of partnership working between galleries and youth organisations. Site one explores a ‘coordinated’ project between a city-based gallery and a further education programme, structured around artist-led workshops. Site two presents a ‘cooperative’ relationship between a gallery and local authority youth service, involving the co-running of late night creative youth provision in an English town. Site three focuses on a coastal region, and a ‘collaborative’ experimental pop up studio, which brought together artists and practitioners with detached youth work expertise. The highlights and pitfalls of these models are discussed, in the context of ongoing crises for UK youth services. Can gallery partnerships provide an answer to the loss of open access youth provision across towns and cities?
