Abstract

Physical therapy is a mainstay of nonoperative treatment for degenerative diseases of the knee. Quadriceps strengthening is a key component of any physical therapy regimen, and there are many other modalities and methods therapists utilize to treat knee pain associated with degenerative joint disease. Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is a popular treatment option for certain patterns of degenerative joint disease of the knee. Physical therapy focused on postoperative rehabilitation begins prior to the surgery and typically continues weeks to months after the procedure. The role of therapy postsurgery may not be as necessary in many UKA patients as it is with total knee arthroplasty, but it is still a standard part of the surgical pathway. This chapter focuses on the three phases of physical therapy, preoperative, day of surgery, and postoperative, and the evidence behind the methods.
