Abstract

Railway automation systems, like other technical systems, despite the constant development are vulnerable to failures. However, due to the fact that they belong to the group of safety-critical systems, also called safety-related systems, they are required to be highly reliable. For this purpose the appropriate maintenance measures and operational tests are carried out. The results of these tests provide some valuable knowledge that allows to improve railway automation systems and modify their operation processes. The implementation of this task requires the development of IT tools that support diagnostics enabling the assessment of the technical condition of a given system, the evolution of this state and the resulting consequences. The software framework developed by the paper’s authors to simulate failures in railway automation systems is helpful in testing diagnostics tools.
