Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to review the influence of smoking and alcohol consumption on osseointegration, which are two of the most common influencing factors from living habits and medical substance abuse. Based on existing preclinical and clinical trials, an up-to-date evidence has been collected and summarized according to their physiological, biological, and pharmacological aspects. In spite of varied amount and frequency in smoking and alcohol, they are believed to be related to impaired bone healing and implant failure. The corresponding prevention and management of the disease are further discussed in order to improve patients’ oral health and maintain the long-term success of dental implant therapy.
