Abstract
This chapter sets out the historical context of the Victorian publishing industry, providing the background for a detailed exploration into how and why organisations in the industry become similar. The chapter then addresses how Victorian Literary Businesses embraces a new approach to the study of one of Britain’s oldest creative industries, by asking how were business practices formed and why were they accepted and consequently legitimised? The chapter also defines the key terms, alongside an explanation of the historical sources used.
