Molar Incisor Hypomineralization

Abstract

Hypomineralized second primary molars (HSPM) show a hypomineralization defect in 1–4 second primary molars, and the clinical appearance of the molars is similar to the appearance of molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH). HSPM has a prevalence of almost 8%, and it can be used as predictor for MIH. The hypomineralized enamel is more caries prone, and adhesive restorations more often fail to bond to this enamel. The cause of HSPM is not exactly known yet, but it is assumed to be multifactorial. At this moment, early diagnosis combined with an early preventive approach gives the best survival possibilities for these molars.
