Summary
We have recently described the large scale isolation of Indian peafowl Pavo cristatus minisatellite sequences and their potential applications in behavioural ecology (Hanotte et al., 1991). We report here further details about our genomic DNA library, the characterization of the minisatellites and the evolutionary conservation of the cloned loci in the Phasianidae. The strategy adopted for the cloning has now been applied in several other species of birds and is reviewed in a broader context, taking into account our previous and new experiences.
