Chemotherapy for systemic mycoses

Progress in Drug Research

Part of the book series: Progress in Drug Research ((PDR,volume 33))

Abstract

The treatment of the systemic mycoses began with the discovery of amphotericin B in 1953 [1]. Thereafter, the pace of discovery of additional antifungal agents has, in comparison with other antiinfectives, been slow, indeed: flucytosine in 1957 [2]; azole derivatives in the 1960s [3], with new triazole derivatives [4, 5] presently under clinical evaluation; polypeptides first reported in 1977 [6] and 1980 [7], with a semisynthetic lipopeptide [8] now nearing clinical trial; allylamines in 1978 [9], with a perorally administrable derivative under clinical study [10].
