Abstract

Myocardial infarction is the leading cause of death worldwide and affects both men and women. Each year more than 5.3 million patients in the United States present to emergency departments with chest pain and related symptoms and ultimately, more than 1.4 million individuals are hospitalized and require either interventional cardiologic procedures and/or coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) (Nashef et al. Ferguson et al.; Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Database to 2004).
