Abstract
Reactive absorption (RA) is most commonly encountered for the separation and/or purification of gas mixtures, but RA is also applied in the production of bulk chemicals, such as nitric and sulfuric acid. Nowadays, reactive separations (RD and RA) using green catalysts offer great opportunities for manufacturing fatty esters. This chapter describes a novel RA process that is similar to RD, but is characterized by the absence of a condenser and reboiler, allowing high selectivity as no products are recycled in form of reflux or boil-up vapors, and no thermal degradation of the products occurs due to a low temperature profile in the column.
