Abstract
Lumbar punctures often are associated with unintentional paresthesias. The tip of the needle in contact with the spinal nerve root initiates depolarization of the axons, which the patient describes as electric shocks in the dermatomes innervated. The paresthesia is triggered by a mechanical stimulus along the axon.
