Abstract

The new European Research Council is Europe’s first funding organisation for basic research on a supranational level. The mission of the ERC is to fund pioneer research with excellence as the sole criterion. The selection procedure is in line with best practices among other funding agencies across the world. Meanwhile, the unique organisational structure with a strict separation of administrative and scientific tasks raises questions about the autonomy and efficiency of the ERC.
