The Lacrimal System

Abstract

External conjunctivodacryocystorhinostomy with placement of a Jones Tube as described by Dr. Lester Jones in the 1960s remains the gold standard treatment for upper lacrimal outflow obstruction. While the authors often perform variations on this surgery, such as an endoscopic approach, the technique described by Dr. Jones continues to be the simplest and most successful treatment in cases where both canaliculi are absent or obliterated. It is also useful in cases of flaccid canaliculi with poor tear drainage, and in those with dysfunction of the normal tear pump mechanism.

The procedure begins in the same way as an external dacryocystorhinostomy, as described elsewhere in this book, and which is described here for the sake of completeness.
