Abstract
With the concurrent evolution of endoscopic sinus surgery and the technological radiologic advances, radiographic imaging has become an important modality in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Computed tomography (CT) is considered the imaging modality of choice for evaluating CRS, primarily due to its ability to demonstrate bony anatomy in great detail. There are numerous anatomic variants within the sinonasal cavity that may contribute to the development of CRS, and prior knowledge of these structures is essential when performing endoscopic sinus surgery. MRI is used as an adjunctive and complimentary study due to its superior soft tissue characterization. There are several characteristic findings of CRS on CT and MRI which will aid in appropriate diagnosis and surgical planning.
