Abstract

Control of bleeding is particularly important for thyroid surgery. Many methods designed to maintain surgical hemostasis are presently used in thyroid surgery.

The harmonic scalpel® (HS) coagulates and simultaneously cuts tissue using mechanical energy with ultrasonic frequency.

LigaSure® is a bipolar, electrosurgical device and it seals vessels by denaturing collagen and elastin within the vessel walls and the surrounding connective tissue.

BiClamp® works on the principle of bipolar thermofusion of tissue.

Many published, comparative and observational, studies have variably reported some significant advantages in terms of operative time and complications rate with the use of these devices respect to the conventional techniques, as clamp-and-tie (CT) in thyroid surgery.

Despite the apparent high costs, employing these devices produces significant benefits for surgical practice.

The significant shorter operative time, a reduction of hospital stay and of complications rate, as reported in different studies, could result in a better utilization of health resources.
