Use Cases for Digital Pathology

  • Chapter
Digital Pathology

Abstract

Core uses of digital pathology in the diagnostic realm are growing and currently include primary diagnosis, frozen section diagnosis, real-time and delayed consultations, various settings of telepathology and telecytology, and quality assurance, both technical and professional. Each of these offers some advantages over conventional glass slides. Educational uses for digital pathology are now firmly entrenched at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels, and are expanding in the graduate (residency) level. Clear advantages in cost and efficiency appear to be accruing to students and learners at all levels, as well as to teachers. Image analysis is a critical tool that links well with digital pathology and further expands the utility and niches into which its use is growing. These applications are now routine in the clinical analysis of certain biomarkers such as Her-2, but are poised to expand significantly as more and more personalized-medicine therapeutic options become available. Other research and biopharma applications are also increasingly demonstrating the utility of digital pathology.
