Abstract

Arachnoid cysts are developmental anomalies that can originate anywhere in the CNS.

They are often discovered as an incidental finding, remain asymptomatic, and can be monitored with serial imaging.

They rarely cause symptoms requiring surgical intervention.

Among major series of transsphenoidal operations, arachnoid cysts comprise 0.22–0.8 % of lesions.

The mean age of patients at the time of clinical diagnosis is 47 years.

The clinical presentation typically includes headache, amenorrhea or galactorrhea, anterior pituitary insufficiency, and/or visual dysfunction.

Hyperprolactinemia due to stalk effect is a common laboratory finding.
