Foregut Duplication

Fundamentals of Pediatric Surgery

Abstract

The exact mechanism of the development of duplication cysts is not well understood. Most foregut duplications present with one or more symptoms, but some are discovered incidentally. Preoperative imaging is paramount in planning a safe and possibly multidisciplinary surgery. The mainstay of treatment is resection. Other surgical options exist for these lesions if resection without significant morbidity is impossible. Increasingly, prenatal diagnosis of foregut duplications necessitates close follow-up and surgical intervention early in life.
