Abstract

The discovery of fission and the subsequent successful construction of nuclear reactors opened up a whole new area of the nuclear chart. Hundreds of medium-mass neutron-rich isotopes were discovered among fission fragments. Very short-lived isotopes came into reach with the development of online mass separators in the 1970s. The discovery of these fragments produced in reactors as well as at accelerator facilities are described.
