Abstract

Event Related Synchronization/ Desynchronization (ERS/ERD) is a standard method to probe brain activity recorded in the Electroencephalogram (EEG). The Spectral F test (SFT) may be used for assessing ERS/ERD. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a painless method of nervous system activation that has been used as both research and diagnostic tools. The EEG analysis during TMS has helped to enlighten the mechanisms of this latter in brain activation. In this work, the SFT is applied for detecting EEG activations caused by TMS. Significant spectral changes were found to occur within the 1 to 30 Hz frequency band, confirming the findings of other authors who stimulated the sensoriomotor cortex. EEG changes statistically detected by STF can be useful to disclose brain information in normal functioning and disease. This method could also be used in other ways of brain activation, aside from TMS.
