Evolution of Ideas About Rating and Ranking in Sports

Handbook of Ratings

Abstract

The chapter focuses on the evolution of the notion of ratings. Initially it was represented by an expert’s opinion. Throughout the development of world sports this notion gradually evolves and actually becomes the index of a global international macrotournament. By developing a formula of the rating for each participant every researcher implicitly solves the system of linear equations. Such an implicit solution of that system provides satisfactory indices for most existing classifications.
