Abstract

This chapter introduces the way in which the Franciscans’ doctrine of poverty was a particular spatial philosophy that imagined a world without property. It offers a brief retelling of the Franciscan poverty dispute which integrates the history of the New World and reflects upon the entanglement of their history with the history of property and rights, two concepts that have played an important role in the history of colonialism.
