Abstract

Hydrocephalus is the most common neurosurgical problem encountered by pediatric neurosurgeons. The overall incidence is difficult to determine, as hydrocephalus can occur as an isolated condition or in conjunction with many other neurological diseases and conditions. It is important that the neurosurgery nurse understands how to assess the child with hydrocephalus and to have accurate information to provide to families. This informative chapter reviews the history of hydrocephalus and current research and treatments. The authors have included many new photographs, as well as classic ones. The patient examples and personal stories help to make the concepts more clear.

Katherine Pearce, Elisabeth Limbacher, and Donna C. Wallace were authors on the first edition but did not contribute to the revision of this chapter.
