Abstract
Pediatric concussions are frequently related to sports or playtime injuries, and the topic has generated considerable interest due to publicity about concussions in professional sports. Concussion is often referred to as a mild form of traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The term “mild” is misleading, as a concussion is still a brain injury that can have devastating consequences for a child if not diagnosed and managed properly. Even though a concussion may not necessarily involve a loss of consciousness, and radiographic imaging is typically negative, it must be treated as a potentially serious health problem for the pediatric patient. This chapter discusses the pathophysiology of concussion, particularly a child’s susceptibility, as well as the signs and symptoms, treatment, potential complications, nursing care, and current return to play/learn (RTP/RTL) guidelines for children who sustain concussions.
