Abstract
The first editorial tasks addressed by Toland are the subject of this chapter, including the form of the book and the text, its decoration, organisation, typography and punctuation. Toland structured his discussion around the question of how the presentation of the edition, most particularly its typography, could influence how its contents were received by the reader, arguing that the reader’s needs should be the primary factor directing how these tasks were handled. In this chapter Toland’s proposals are examined, and evaluated in relation to the existing editions of Cicero and contemporary editorial practice.
