Abstract

Therapeutic apheresis procedures aim to remove a pathologic substance from a patient’s blood via mechanical means through a centrifuge or filtration mechanism. In pediatric nephrology, therapeutic plasma exchange targets removal of antibodies or other pathologic proteins and replaces the plasma with either albumin or plasma. Plasma exchange is usually combined with immunosuppressive medication regimens to prevent/reduce antibody production. The cases presented in this chapter highlight treatment considerations for an aggressive acute glomerulonephritis and for one of the more common disease indications for therapeutic plasma exchange in pediatric nephrology: focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).
