Abstract

The Donne and Contemporary Poetry Project, originating at Fordham University, involved readings of poems in dialogue with Donne at Barnard College, the New York Public Library, and Fordham. In addition, the 2015 annual meeting of the John Donne Society included papers and a poetry reading. These events aimed not only to celebrate the writings of Donne and his contemporary heirs and assigns, but also to address some tensions in the profession today, such as divides between poets and literary critics, and the neglect of earlier literature in many literature and MFA programs.
