Abstract
A reference axis in a two-dimensional rectangular Cartesian coordinate system; by convention, the horizontal axis (x-axis) of a bivariate (x, y) scatterplot. This terminology was used by, and may have been introduced by, the British mathematician, (Sir) James Ivory (1765–1842) (Ivory 1809; Miller 2015a).
