Antibiotics and Antibiotics Resistance Genes in Soils

Abstract

Antibiotics are used worldwide to prevent or treat bacterial infections in human. In animals, antibiotics are used for treating bacterial infections and promote their growth. Worldwide consumption of antibiotics has increased drastically in the last decade. Several recent studies reported the presence of antibiotics in different environmental matrices such as water, sediment and soil. β-lactam, macrolides, tetracycline, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, and sulfonamides are the six majorly consumed antibiotics across the globe. A large percentage of used antibiotics are eventually reaching the terrestrial environment through human and animal excreta, disposal of improperly treated wastewater, use of sludge as manure and use of treated wastewater for irrigation. Exposure to a cocktail of antibiotics present in the environmental matrices enhances the possibility of developing antibiotic resistance. This chapter is a review on the consumption, physico-chemical properties and sources of antibiotics in Asian soil.
