Abstract
Meningiomas of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) were covered in three chapters in the original monograph by Cushing and Eisenhardt in 1938 (Cushing and Eisenhardt, Meningiomas: their classification, regional behaviour, life history, and surgical ends results, Springfield, Charles C. Thomas, 1938). Referred collectively to as “meningiomas of the cerebellar chamber,” they included “tumors of the basilar groove” (1 patient), “subtentorial and recess tumors” (15 patients), and “those simulating acoustic tumors” (7 patients). Today the term “CPA tumor,” when referring to a meningioma in this region, seems to include petroclival, lateral-inferior tentorial, petrous face, jugular foramen, and anterolateral foramen magnum tumors. However, we, and others, believe a more specific anatomic description is appropriate given the corresponding clinical syndrome that with which tumors along the petrous face present. This classification excludes petroclival, dumbbell lateral tentorial, and lateral cerebellar convexity tumors.
